Today, women keep a journal for self-care and self-expression. However, journaling is not a new practice as we will explore in this session. An earlier form of a journal, the “commonplace book”—a knowledge-gathering practice—offered nineteenth-century women a way to educate and entertain themselves as well as reflect on their daily lives. Catherine will provide a brief history of the use of handmade notebooks by nineteenth- and twentieth-century women writers including Virginia Woolf, the Brontë sisters, and Jane Austen, who introduced a commonplace book into her novel Emma (1816) and is thought to have kept one herself. Together, we will learn what women put into their handwritten “commonplace books”—e.g. favorite quotations, recipes, lyrics, poems, snippets from daily life, photographs, drawings, riddles, reflections, and keepsakes. We will then turn to creation, making our own commonplace books.

Each participant will design a cover for a notebook (provided) that reflects her personality or the purpose of the book itself. Pam will guide us in this activity. We will provide an assortment of materials to decorate your covers—beautiful papers, stick-on jewels, stamps, and metallic markers—and special literary quotes to add to your commonplace books to begin journaling! At the end of the workshop, we will admire each other’s commonplace book creations and share one meaningful selection we have included.
